Description

Giclée on paper

This painting is one of the 36 paintings of Sydney I plan to create. Since my arrival in Australia, I have been captivated by the natural and cultural beauty of this wonderful land. My work is a fusion of traditional Chinese painting and Western painting, highlighting the essence of traditional Chinese art’s capability to capture the Yi Jing (意境) of the subject we wish to paint. The painting is created using gouache and watercolours.

There are numerous works of art featuring boats and ships, yet trains—as important vehicles of transportation—often receive less artistic attention. Therefore, I have chosen to paint this Sydney train traversing the hills.

This gouache/watercolour painting elegantly captures a T9 train traveling through the lush hills of Sydney in the afternoon. The artwork, rendered in soft hues, features the train’s bright yellow carriages vividly contrasting with the verdant backdrop of rolling hills and dense foliage. The focal point is the now-vanished wooden Bridge over Devlin’s Creek, depicted with a careful attention to detail that evokes a sense of nostalgia. This bridge, set against the serene harmony of man-made marvels amidst natural beauty, invites viewers to reflect on a tranquil coexistence from a bygone era. This piece offers a peaceful visual interplay between urban development and the natural environment.
