Wang Wei

Wang Wei, born and raised in Kunming, Yunnan, is the creator of one of China’s most popular font foundries, Senty Font. Currently based in Sydney, Australia, Wei has established himself as an artist whose work bridges both traditional and contemporary techniques. His paintings are celebrated for their tranquil and meditative qualities, often described as profoundly Buddhist in spirit, offering viewers a peaceful and reflective experience. Merging Chinese and Western artistic traditions, his work brings a unique fusion of cultures to life on canvas.

In addition to his painting practice, Wang Wei is a recognised leader in the field of typography. He was Canva’s design lead for fonts, where he established Canva’s first font studio. During his time at Canva, Wei created 10 of Canva’s first original Chinese fonts. His typography has been widely used in Chinese-speaking communities worldwide, with prominent features in major international projects, including the popular film Minions: The Rise of Gru, Disney’s Onward official poster and trailer, and advertisements for global brands such as Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble, Sony, and Samsung.

Wei is currently conducting PhD research at UNSW Art & Design, focusing on inclusive education, multimodal design, and dyslexic-friendly fonts. His research aims to push the boundaries of typography and design to enhance accessibility for all readers. Recognised as a Global Talent by the Australian Government and a recipient of the prestigious Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship, Wei’s practice spans painting and design, continually exploring the intersections of art, accessibility, and cross-cultural expression.
